Herman J Hernández Earns An Honorary Doctorate

Los Cien is pleased to announce today, that our very own Herman J. Hernandez was selected as one of three Sonoma County community advocates to earn an honorary doctorate degrees from Sonoma State University on Sunday May 22.

Today we are proud and honor his incredible achievement! According to Sonoma State University where the honor was bestowed, “Honorary degree recipients are distinguished individuals who serve as examples for their contributions in areas that benefit California State University campuses.”

As the founding father of Los Cien, Herman J. Hernandez, who is originally from Guerneville received his honorary degree during Sonoma State University’s spring commencement ceremony. Los Cien’s founding had humble beginnings when Herman began meeting with Latina and Latino leaders in the backroom of a Mary’s Pizza Shack over 14 years ago only to then continue to grow the organization into the hundreds of members that are active today, along with Los Cien’s original founders.

Since then, Los Cien has risen to be one of the premiere Latinx organizations for launching many critical conversations on key issues facing people of color in our community. Los Cien has hosted important dialogues on diverse themes and issues that include: political representation, the state of the local economy, environment, housing and mental health.

Herman J., now newly minted as Dr. Herman J has always been a powerhouse and inspiration since the inception of Los Cien by volunteering hundreds of hours to secure its place in the community. Our organization has always been a platform to inspire and create new leadership. Besides founding Los Cien, Dr. Herman J. has served on boards of directors for United Way of the Wine County, the Community Foundation Sonoma County, Hanna Boys Center and the Culinary Institute of America. He was also a founding member of an ad hoc committee that went on to become the Redwood Empire Food Bank. He has also served on advisory boards for Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University.

Congrats Dr. Herman J, you make us proud!
