We are proud to present yet another program in our series addressing race and social justice reform. The topic this time will be the Community’s ability to create, implement, and participate in a robust law enforcement oversight program. The Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO) was established by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on September 15, 2015. IOLERO was a direct Community and Government response to the tragic shooting of Andy Lopez in 2013.

Recently, the Supervisors formed an ad hoc committee to consider changes to the IOLERO’s ordinance in order to strengthen its ability to perform its intended function – law enforcement oversight in Sonoma County. The Board is considering changes proposed by IOLERO’s director, provisions included in the Evelyn Cheatham Ordinance and input from the community which support greater independence, increased funding, clear authority, and unfettered access to the information and staff needed to accomplish the agency’s mission of oversight of the Sonoma County Sheriffs’ Department. The Board of Supervisors is considering whether to make these changes directly through a Board of Supervisors’ amendment or by placing the Evelyn Cheatham Ordinance on the November 2020 ballot (with or without modifications).
